Mat

Classical mat work is Pilates at its purest — your own body as the resistance. It builds the core awareness, breath and control that carry over into every apparatus class.

What you'll gain

Core strength and control

Every mat exercise works from the centre outward. With no springs to assist you, your own core carries the load — so you build deep, honest strength and the control to use it well.

Body awareness and breath

Mat work teaches you to feel each movement and to breathe with it. Slow, precise sequences sharpen your sense of alignment, so you move with more ease both in class and through the day.

No equipment needed

All you need is a mat and your own body weight. That makes classical Pilates simple to start and easy to carry with you — a practice you can return to anywhere, any time.

A foundation for apparatus work

The strength, breath and control you build on the mat carry straight over to the reformer and full apparatus. Mat is where Pilates begins, and where every other class is grounded.

Better posture and mobility

Working through a full range with control lengthens tight muscles and frees stiff joints. Over a few weeks, most clients notice they stand taller and move more freely.

Mat work, explained

Classical mat work is the oldest form of Pilates, and still its foundation. Joseph Pilates built his original sequence to develop strength, control and length using nothing but the body itself.

Every exercise begins from a strong, stable centre. As you move slowly and precisely through each sequence, the deep core muscles learn to support the spine — the control that carries into every other class.

Because there is no machine to assist you, mat work asks your own body to do the work. That makes it honest and adaptable — the same exercise can be gentle for a beginner or demanding for a seasoned practitioner.

Breath leads every movement. Learning to breathe fully and evenly steadies the body, focuses the mind and links one exercise to the next — which is why breath is the first thing we teach.

In a class you move through a flowing sequence — warm-up, core work, and exercises for the back, arms and legs — with your instructor correcting alignment and tailoring each movement to you.

Mat is the ideal place to begin and to return to. The awareness, strength and control you build here are the foundation every reformer and apparatus class is built upon.
